Why I Don’t Ask My Clients to Choose Their Photos

Portland family photography is about more than beautiful pictures. It’s about preserving the connections, emotions, and little moments that tell the story of your family.

When families first inquire about booking a photography session with me, one of the questions I often hear is:

“Can we choose our own photos after the session?”

My answer has always been the same: you don’t have to.

Photo selection is already part of my photography experience. It’s something I intentionally include in my process because I believe creating meaningful photographs goes far beyond pressing the shutter.

And there’s a reason I choose to work this way.

It’s not because I don’t understand the desire to choose your own favorite images. Quite the opposite. I know that every person sees a photograph differently. We all have our own preferences, our own memories, and our own emotional connections to the moments captured in front of the camera.

You might love the photograph where everyone is looking at the camera, smiling beautifully.

I might fall in love with the quiet moment when a dad looks down at his daughter, the way a mom instinctively reaches for her child’s hand, or the split second when a little one suddenly throws their arms around a parent’s neck.

You see the photograph you love most.

I see the photographs that, when placed together, tell the story of your family.

And those are two different things.

Photography Is About More Than the Perfect Smile

When we think about family photographs, it’s easy to imagine everyone looking at the camera, smiling, and standing perfectly together.

Those photographs can be wonderful. They give us a beautiful way to remember what our family looked like during a particular season of life.

But for me, family photography has always been about something more.

It’s about the way your child reaches for you without thinking. The laughter that comes out of nowhere. The little hands that hold yours a little tighter. The way you look at your children when they’re too busy playing to notice.

These are the moments that often happen between the photographs we think we’re supposed to take.

And sometimes, they’re the moments that mean the most.

As a Portland family photographer, I want to create images that feel like your family, not simply a collection of photographs that look beautiful on their own. I want to capture the personalities, relationships, and small details that make this chapter of your life uniquely yours.

Because your family isn’t defined by how perfectly everyone smiles at the camera.

It’s defined by the way you love each other, the way you interact, and the little things that make your everyday life yours.

Those are the stories I want to preserve.

Why I Take Care of the Photo Selection for You

A single family photography session can produce hundreds of images.

But my work doesn’t end when the camera goes down.

After our session, I go through the photographs carefully, looking beyond whether everyone has their eyes open or whether a particular image looks technically perfect.

I pay attention to the feeling of each photograph.

I look for genuine expressions, meaningful connections, subtle gestures, and those fleeting moments that might be easy to overlook if you’re only looking for the most obvious favorite.

I also consider how the images work together.

Does one photograph tell a different part of the story? Does the next image reveal a new emotion, a different connection, or a quieter side of your family? Do the photographs, as a collection, reflect the experience and feeling of our time together?

This is where my creative judgment comes in.

My job isn’t simply to deliver a large number of photographs. It’s to thoughtfully curate a collection that feels cohesive, intentional, and meaningful.

Rather than handing you hundreds of images and asking you to spend hours comparing them, wondering which ones to keep and which ones to leave behind, I take care of that process for you.

I select the photographs that I believe best represent your family and the story unfolding in front of my camera.

Then I edit each selected image with care, bringing the final gallery together as a complete body of work.

To me, this is an essential part of the Portland family photography experience I want to offer: a process that feels considered from beginning to end, allowing you to enjoy your photographs without the burden of making every creative decision yourself.

What If Your Favorite Photo Isn’t in My Final Gallery?

This is a fair question, and I think it’s important to talk about it honestly.

There may be a photograph you absolutely love that doesn’t make it into my final selection.

And that’s okay.

Photography is subjective. There isn’t one universal definition of a beautiful photograph, and there isn’t always a single right answer.

You have your own taste, memories, and emotional connection to the images. I bring my experience, artistic perspective, and professional judgment to the process.

Sometimes, the photograph that means the most to you is the one where everyone is smiling at the camera. Sometimes, it’s a candid image that reminds you of a funny moment during our session.

And sometimes, the photograph that stays with me is one you might not have noticed at first.

Maybe it’s a quiet glance between a parent and child. Maybe it’s the way your little one leans into you when they’re feeling tired. Maybe it’s a photograph that captures the beautiful chaos of family life exactly as it was that day.

These different perspectives are part of what makes photography personal.

When I select your photographs, I’m not trying to tell you which moments you’re allowed to love. I’m bringing my own artistic vision to the collection and deciding which images, together, best express the story I witnessed.

You bring your memories and your feelings.

I bring my perspective and my craft.

Both matter, and neither needs to be exactly the same.

A Thoughtfully Curated Gallery Tells a Bigger Story

Imagine looking through your family photographs years from now.

You might remember the way your toddler ran around during the session, the way your partner made everyone laugh, or how small your children’s hands felt in yours.

You probably won’t remember every individual photograph we took.

But you might remember how the entire collection made you feel.

That’s why I believe the final gallery matters just as much as the photography session itself.

A meaningful gallery isn’t simply a collection of technically beautiful images. It’s a sequence of moments that work together, allowing you to experience the story rather than just look at individual pictures.

One photograph might capture the energy and playfulness of your children. Another might show the tenderness between you and your partner. A quieter image might reveal the way your family naturally comes together when nobody is asking you to look at the camera.

Each photograph adds something different.

Together, they create a fuller picture of your family.

This is the part of the process that I love most: taking all the little pieces of a session and bringing them together into something that feels complete.

Because years from now, I want you to see more than what everyone looked like.

I want you to remember what it felt like to be there.

You’re Investing in More Than a Photoshoot

When you book a family photography session with me, you’re not simply paying for a few hours of my time with a camera.

You’re investing in the way I observe, the way I see your family, the decisions I make, and the final story I create for you.

From the moment we begin photographing your family to the final edited gallery, every step is part of the creative process.

That includes the way I guide our session, the moments I choose to photograph, the images I select, and the way I bring everything together in the final edit.

I believe these decisions are part of what makes professional photography meaningful.

You aren’t just receiving a collection of files. You’re receiving my interpretation of your family’s story, shaped by my experience, artistic vision, and attention to detail.

And because photo selection is included in my photography service, you don’t have to spend an evening scrolling through hundreds of nearly identical images, trying to decide which ones deserve a place in your gallery.

You can leave that part to me.

My goal is to make the experience feel simple and intentional, while giving the photographs themselves the care and thought they deserve.

Your Job Is to Be Present. Mine Is to Tell Your Story.

Life with a family is already full of decisions, schedules, and responsibilities.

The last thing I want is for your photography experience to become another task on your to-do list.

When you book a family photoshoot with me, I want you to focus on what matters most: being with your people.

Let your children play. Hold them close. Laugh with your partner. Embrace the imperfect, unpredictable moments that make your family what it is.

You don’t need to worry about performing for the camera or deciding which photographs are worth keeping.

You don’t need to know which moments will become your favorites, either.

Simply be present and let your family unfold naturally in front of the camera.

I’ll take care of the rest, from photographing the moments as they happen to selecting and editing the images that tell your story.

My hope is that when you receive your final gallery, you won’t just see a series of beautiful photographs.

You’ll recognize yourselves in them.

You’ll remember the laughter, the closeness, the little personalities, and the fleeting details that made this season of life so special.

And perhaps, years from now, you’ll look back at these photographs and realize that the smallest moments were never really small at all.

They were your life, happening right in front of you.

That’s what I want to preserve.

That’s why I choose the photographs.

And that’s the experience I hope to give every family who steps in front of my camera.

You live the moment.
I’ll tell the story.
